Lovers of NASCAR know there's a lot more to the sport than watching fast cars chase each other toward a finish line. We'll talk with Allen Lessels, the author of Live Free, Drive Fast about some of the unusual stories behind the visible track scene. Lessels makes a compelling case for why The New Hampshire International Speedway has hosted NASCAR races since 1990. We'll also talk with NASCAR's 2005 Rookie of the Year Sean Caisse. He's 20, and already has an impressive record for 2006. Sean is a native of Pelham, NH.

There's More to Racing than NHIS

This coming week, thousands of racing fans will flock to New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon to see their heros in action. But throughout the summer months, thousands to to Lee USA, Star Speedway, Monadnock and half a dozen smaller tracks. They go for their weekly racing fix. These tracks are the training ground for young drivers including women. NHPR Correspondent Jim Jeannotte has the story.

Why Watch Cars Drive Fast in a Circle?

Later today thousands of race fans and their portable heaters will fill the stands at the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon for the 8th annual Winston Cup Race. NHPR's Lisa Peakes called Pete Pistone of Racing One, a motor sports media company in Chicago to ask about the history and the allure of NASCAR racing. Pistone said to understand auto racing, you just have to be there.

NASCAR + Thanksgiving = Traffic Jam

If you're traveling between Concord and Salem on Friday, you may want to check your watch before you leave. For the first time ever, a NASCAR race at the Speedway in Loudon is scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend. Assistant Commissioner of Transportation Gil Rogers told NHPR's Trish Anderton that will bring heavy traffic to the southern end of Interstate 93.
