Ice Fishing in New Hampshire

By Sean Hurley on Thursday, February 14, 2008.

The 27th Annual Meredith Rotary Fishing Derby took place this past weekend.

Hundreds of fishermen found their spots on frozen lakes across the region.

They cut holes into the ice and dropped their lines, hoping to catch the biggest tagged rainbow trout and the grand prize of a brand new fishing boat.

NHPR Correspondent Sean Hurley went out across Meredith Bay on Saturday and Sunday to experience a day in the life of an ice fisherman.

He brings back this report.

Wanna Sing "The Messiah"?

By Doug MacPherson on Friday, December 8, 2006.

It’s hard to imagine Christmas without a choir singing Handel’s Messiah.

In recent years a new tradition has developed: the “Messiah-sing.”

It operates like a pick-up basketball game. Anyone who wants to sing the Messiah shows up at a concert hall with music in-hand. Tenors sit with tenors and sopranos with sopranos. And then -- without rehearsal -- the concert begins.

New Hampshire Public Radio correspondent Doug MacPherson attended one-such Messiah-sing at the Music Hall in Portsmouth.

He filed this audio postcard.

Over thirty people have entered.

NHPR Producer Cheryl Senter spoke with several of them as they dropped their entries off earlier this week and she provides this audio postcard.

It's Apple Picking Season

By Cheryl Senter on Friday, October 6, 2006.

Apple picking season in New England is fast and sweet.

The idea is to pick them before they drop.

And once their stems dry, the juice laden apples start dropping like crazy.

So, at Woodmont Orchards, nestled along side I-93 in Londonderry, workers are picking like crazy.

The Woodmont staff are working six and seven days a week to pick, clean, sort, box, and ship their Macs.

Everyone has Rhythm

By Cheryl Senter on Tuesday, September 5, 2006.

Since everyone with a beating heart already "has rhythm!", anyone can drum.

That could well be the motto of the drum-jam.

It's held the first Friday of the month at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Concord.

This past Friday evening, 16 people showed up... of all ages.

Freelance Producer Cheryl Senter went along and sends this audio postcard.

The Gas Dock Girls

By Shannon Mullen on Wednesday, August 30, 2006.

It's back to school time again, and lots of college students from around New Hampshire will be putting in their final hours at their summer jobs this Labor Day weekend.

They've been doing seasonal jobs such as landscaping, waiting tables, and lifeguarding... and in the Lakes Region, some have been pumping gas.

It's not the typical summer job, but these aren't your typical gas stations.

They're gas docks, and on Lake Winnipesaukee, most of them are run by gas dock girls.

New Hampshire Public Radio correspondent Shannon Mullen stopped by one gas dock in Gilford, to talk to these girls of summer, and she sent us this audio postcard.

By Cheryl Senter on Friday, August 18, 2006.

This is county fair season....and what fair would be complete without those equine feats of strength?

Freelance producer Cheryl Senter sent us this audio postcard from last weeks horse pull at the fair in Swanzey.

The Pleasant Pond Pirates

By Christina Nyquist on Wednesday, August 16, 2006.

The sound of the ice cream truck's jingle is certainly familiar during the summer, but a couple of young women in Deerfield have come up with another, less common way to peddle frozen treats.

Every weekend, 16-year old Onni Irish and her friend Philomena Duffy pilot their ice cream boat to residents on Pleasant Pond.

They call themselves the Pleasant Pond Pirates.

NHPR's Christina Nyquist caught up with the young entrepreneurs as they packed up their skiff for their route around the lake.

Over the weekend, hundreds of people from around the world showed up in the town of Gilsum, in southwest New Hampshire.

They came to buy, sell and trade semi-precious stones, minerals and fossiles at the 42nd Annual Gilsum Rock Swap and Mineral Show.

The Keene Sentinel's Donna Moxley was there and sent us this audio postcard.

Bike Week's Wall of Death

By Cheryl Senter on Wednesday, June 14, 2006.

All this week, New Hampshire Public Radio is bringing you some of the sights and sounds of bike week in Laconia.

Today, the Wall of Death.

It's a regular attraction at Bike Week...and it draws the crowds.

A motorcycle rider uses centrifugal force to hold him and his bike horizontal as he rides around the inside of what looks like a very large barrel.

Freelance Producer Cheryl Senter sends us this postcard.
