Pain-Free Meat
By Virginia Prescott on Thursday, September 10, 2009.
While many feel that such practices are inhumane, they don’t seem to be going away anytime soon. But Adam Shriver has an idea – why not genetically engineer animals to not suffer? He’s a philosopher at Washington University in St. Louis, and as you can imagine, his provocative proposal published this month has already garnered some strong reactions. He joins us on the line with his defense of pain-free food. Inhumane treatment of animals (in the context of factory farms):
- hurts those who do the farming. Bad action/callousness/lack of compassion are not things we - presumably - want to encourage in people. Golden rule, people.
- hurts the ecosystem. Disease and rapid disease evolution. Animal waste. Problems that don't go away just because we have somehow rendered the animals incapable of suffering. What are the antibiotic requirement for keeping an animal healthy if it doesn't even care that it's rubbed itself raw?
