Stretching Through Hard Times

By Martha Poole on Tuesday, July 21, 2009.

It’s a tough lot for the unemployed in this economy. There are a few positive testimonials, among the many stories of individuals struggling to get back in the game. For some, being laid off has allowed more time to spend with the family, or volunteer in the community - and for some it’s a chance to get back in touch with their inner prana.

The New York Times
reports
that non-profit yoga retreats are experiencing a surge in popularity. The apparent reason may be the bottom line. At some of these facilities, visitors pay as little as $300 a month for yoga classes and room and board, provided they participate in chores around the ashram.

Monetary considerations aside, everyone has a different reason for joining the ashram. Applications have doubled over the past year at some facilities. A diverse set of students and professionals have been turned on to the alternative lifestyle, after being turned out by a sour job market.
