Gay Marriage Law Cuts Deep

By Dan Gorenstein on Wednesday, June 3, 2009.

A wave of emotion flooded the statehouse yesterday as a couple hundred residents watched the House pass gay marriage legislation.

New Hampshire Public Radio’s Dan Gorenstein has more.

Often when debating gay marriage, lawmakers would say ‘we have more important issues to deal with.’

And while it’s true the state faces a some half a billion dollar budget shortfall, few ordinary citizens have watched the drawn out debate on state spending.

59 year old Fenton Groen from Rochester was one of a few hundred who sat in the House Gallery to see what lawmakers would do on same sex marriage.

After the vote he said, he fears the law will tell children it’s ok to be gay.

TAPE: it’s way more about a sanctioning and normalization of a gay life style than it is about gay marriage.

Unlike Grouen, 18 year old Cassidy Nicosia from Deerfield was literally dancing in the hallway after the vote.

TAPE: everyone should have the same rights and I have a twin who is a lesbian and I don’t understand why I should have different rights than she has.

The new law will take effect at the beginning of next year.
