Finding Gay Leaders

By Virginia Prescott on Tuesday, May 26, 2009.

Advocates and opponents of gay marriage are anxiously waiting to see if New Hampshire will follow Vermont, Iowa and Maine in legalizing gay marriage. The House and Senate passed a bill legalizing same sex marriage onto Governor John Lynch. Lynch sent it back, threatening a veto unless lawmakers made clear that religious organizations and businesses who oppose gay marriage won’t be forced to take part.

Legislators revised the language, but the new bill lost by two votes, with some legislators accusing the governor of sanctioning discrimination. Now negotiators are scrambling to get it back on Lynch’s desk. Political reporter Matt Bai wrote about shifting attitudes on gay marriage and the search for political leaders in the gay rights movement for The New York Times Magazine.
