Zooming In On Hyperlocal News
By Virginia Prescott on Thursday, April 16, 2009.
The way we get our news is changing rapidly. We recently devoted an entire program to teasing out the troubles facing newspapers, and looking at some strategies to save them from bankruptcy, and to prepare a new generation of journalists for the multimedia age.
Here to look at this trend is Greg Sterling, an analyst who’s been following the market for a decade. And Adrian Holovaty, the founder of EveryBlock, one of the leading "hyperlocal" news sites. We also learn about an example of a hyperlocal news site right here in our own backyard. Former Boston Globe editor Jack Driscoll founded Rye Reflections, a citizen-journalism site in his adopted hometown of Rye, NH. He’s also written a book called Couch Potatoes Sprout: The Rise of Online Community Journalism. The New York Times: 'Hyperlocal' Web Sites Deliver News Without Newspapers About usWord of Mouth is all about what's new. Online and on-air, the show looks at our fascinating and ever-changing world, and puts the latest ideas under a microscope. Word of Mouth investigates everything from science and technology, to health and the environment, to new trends in popular culture. The show airs Monday through Thursday at noon and is hosted by Virginia Prescott. Contact usSay what you want to say. How you want to say it. We want to hear from you.
