Newspapers on the Silver Screen

By Virginia Prescott on Monday, April 13, 2009.

All the President’s MenThe film All the President’s Men set up a spike in applications to journalism school. The film stars Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman as Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, The Washington Post reporters who broke the Watergate story that led to Richard Nixon's impeachment. At a time when young people were bucking authority, Woodward and Bernstien took on the establishment.

It’s perhaps the most famous film about the journalism profession, and cemented the image of the crusading reporter in American popular opinion, fighting corruption at great personal risk - an image now tarnished by the years.

Two films out this month put newspaper reporters front and center. So we’ve asked Word of Mouth contributor Garen Daly to review how Hollywood has covered the newspaper trade through the ages. He’s also host of the Frugal Yankee website and radio show.
