Reinventing J-School
By Virginia Prescott on Thursday, April 2, 2009.
The newspaper industry shed almost 16,000 jobs last year, and this year isn't shaping up to be any better. Despite the dim prospects for print jobs, enrollment in j-schools is actually going up: applications to Columbia University’s school of journalism are up nearly 40 percent from last year. There’s a 25 percent spike at the University of Maryland's program. But with so much change in the real world of media and news, schools are tweaking their curricula to train the reporters of tomorrow. David Moltz reports for Inside Higher Ed, and he joins us to talk about the ways schools have been adapting. We're also joined by William Grueskin, dean of academic affairs at Columbia Journalism School.
