You may have already heard it on the radio, but NHPR is moving to a new facility to meet the station's growing needs. Along with that are visions of more transmitters across the state, separate radio “streams” carrying more programming and new technologies to provide the best possible coverage. We talk with NHPR's leadership about these changes and answer your questions about the future.

re Transmitter

I live in Franconia, NH and am unable to receive a clear signal to listen to NHPR. When in my car in Littleton I listen, but otherwise I listen to VPR (out of Burlington- 107.9) or Portland, Maine (90.3). It's crazy that I can can receive their signals, but not yours. I have been a supporter to NHPR for years (as well as VPR). I always comment that we need a stronger signal up here in the north country- but, it seems, to no avail. I've just about given up. Will your upgades include us?

For the last few days the

For the last few days the signal from WEVJ has been poor. What is wrong and when will it be fixed?

Special stream for members

It always drives me crazy to have to sit through pledge drives when I'm already a member. Here's the Big Idea - Members are able to log on to a special area of NHPR.org and listen to a pledge-free stream of NPR/music/other while the solicitations go on! I'm sure many non-members would get on board in order to enjoy the benefit.

Digital radio

I am listening to the last minutes of the Wednesday discussion on The Exchange of the future of NHPR and am sorely disappointed that a 24/7 classical music transmission is only in the thinking stage. I now listen to Vermont classical, although I am well beyond the expected reception range. My contributions to public radio reflect this dual loyalty. If little Vermont can do it, why not New Hampshire? Now!

transmission of broadcast

I agree with the many loyal listeners who have trouble receiving a decent signal from nhpr. We live in Wolfeboro- not in the mountains, not hundreds of miles away-- WOLFEBORO-- and even this morning had to switch to Maine PR to get a decent signal for Morning Edition. How ironic to put up with a static filled poor signal in order to hear about all of the improvements to NHPR that will do NOTHING to improve the signal. We have asked about this multiple times and NEVER received any kind of reply, except of course for requests for donations. I find it hard to believe that the FCC which has no teeth left in it at all after 8 years of Bushworld is the problem. Sorry that just doesn't cut it. I am glad that you are updating your technology, but I couldn't even listen to a stream version this morning on my computer. Dear me.
I started listening to nhpr when it made it's first broadcast as WEVO. I volunteered in the early days and came in on Sunday mornings with other volunteers to put the pre-planned classical records on the turntables, download satelite feeds, shovel out the dish on top of the "studio" and read the wireservice news. Lots of things have changed since then, but the signal we receive varies from day to day and Maine and sometimes even Vermont come in much more strongly than you do. I love your weekday morning schedule, but if Maine carried it, I would not be listening to you much at all. Sorry but "That's the truth".
I am done with my rant. Thank you.

NHPR's move

Hi Laura,
I have been an NHPR listener since the WEVO days and the station has been part of what is home to me here. Now I'm volunteering with Portsmouth's WSCA Community RadiO. It is a dynamic station that broadcasts Democracy Now, has a strong political talk show produced by local activists, and features Seacost music and and the arts, and, yes, is wonderfully eclectic. I am working on telling local stories to our listeners in a new community news program. I know there is competition for places within radio frequencies, but community radio is valuable and the opposite of "not going anywhere" as Betsy said in the show. Please know that community radio plays a vital role beside NHPR and NPR for citizens and serves to strengthen communities.
I wish you and all of the station success in your new home on Pillsbury St.
Best wishes,
Terry Farish

Terry Farish comment

Hi Terry,

Thanks so much for your comment, and please let me clarify. What I was trying to say that low power FM stations are thriving -- they're not going anywhere as in they're not going away! I think there's tremendous enthusiasm for the service that these stations provide. I agree with you completely.
All best,

Betsy

I can't help but notice that

I can't help but notice that the ONLY response was to thank someone for their support....nothing for those of us that have significant concerns and problems with the service THAT WE FUND.

More Local

I'd love to see you use NHPR to make more locally produced and locally focused programs available (like WSCA) but perhaps "sponsored" by the resources of NHPR. Broadcasting local board meetings would be a great start, perhaps with streams bringing these meetings to the public, and at the same time helping to hold local boards more accountable.

New facility capital campaign fund drive

I have to agree with others in our general annoyance at this fund drive's repeated interruptions of regularly scheduled programming. Your timing is off as well. We've already responded to pledge drive solicitations, and the most cursory review of the current economy would suggest that many of us are retrenching financially and/or cycling assistance to food banks or community gift-giving targeted to those more financially strapped. While I wish you good luck, I must say too that it gets easier to listen to WBUR with each passing interruption.
