Comment for Horn

Since the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 the GOP has systematically set about dismantling the New Deal of FDR. Tax cuts for the rich have taken money from the middle class. "Creative" mortgage securitization made possible by Republican deregulation let the wealthy steal the equity in people's home. Now, Horn and Bush want to privitize social security so they can steal that too. Thanks, but no thanks!

Social Security

The way I heard it was that Jennifer Horn was NOT in favor of taking your Social Security and privitizing it, but rather allowing individuals to have the choice as to how to manage their own social security fund. If you want to keep it where it is, that is your choice. Few people realize that all federal employees already have this option today--including all members of Congress.
I was impressed by Jennifer Horn today. She really had a detailed grasp of the issues, a common sense approach to solving the problems, and a passion for NH residents.

Social Security Privitization

It sounds good until you look into the details. For years federal employees did not participate in social security at all. Their very, very generous pension plan was paid for by the taxpayer directly. To increase social security revenues, a deal was cut with the federal employee unions so that they would contribute to social security AND have the equivalent of a federally ensured 401k. What Horn and the Republicans are offering is nothing like that. What they propose is to "let" us invest part of our social security payments in the private market with NO GUARANTEES. Can you imagine what would have happened over the past months if 50% of social security had been invested in the stock market? If you want to gamble with your retirement savings, use your IRA and/or 401k. But leave social security as it is--a safety net for retirees.

Dismantling the New Deal

The New Deal is incorrectly lauded as the cure for the Great Depression and the ultimate social safety net.

Roosevelt's policies prolonged the Depression and we will only see the downside of Social Security as struggle to pay for the Baby Boomer retirements.

The programs of Medicare Medicaid and SS all face funding shortfalls of 70 to 100 trillion dollars. Yet neither Obama nor MCCain mention this. Rahter, they buy votes with more and more false promises.
