Is Online Communication Changing How You Talk?

By Avishay Artsy on Wednesday, June 18, 2008.

Next Monday on Word of Mouth, we’ll be looking at how language is changing in an online and media world. There's concern that new technology is influencing how we write, speak and listen. New and online tools - instant messaging, cell phones, multitasking, Facebook, blogs, and wikis - are creating a new language, but not in the way we might suppose.

We want to know: how are you seeing our language change? Have you loosened – or simply changed – your rules for correspondence? Are you using emoticons, even though you thought you never would? Do you find yourself using expressions like "LOL" or "OMG" or "BFF" or "I less-than-three you"? Are you noticing a communication gap between yourself and your kids or your parents? Share your stories here, and we'll read them on Monday's show.

Online communication suits me. It forces me to slow down and gain control over emotions that might othewise influence (not always positively) what I might say. I also like the challange of accurately conveying a point or inference without the aid of tone of voice and facial expressions. Overall, it has improved my vocabulary and (to an extent) my grammar.

Word of Mouth is on the move! Sign up for our podcast and take the show wherever you go.
