Huckabee Rides Iowa Momentum in Henniker

By Dianne Finch on Saturday, January 5, 2008.

Presidential contender Mike Huckabee makes a big splash in a small town following his success in Iowa.

NHPR’s Dianne Finch has more.

Less than a day after his big win in Iowa, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee addressed an energized capacity crowd at a small college’s gymnasium in Henniker.

He spoke about everything from national security to his plan to eliminate the federal income tax.

Huckabee would replace it with a consumption tax – which he says would encourage honest work.

“Right now you’re not only paying your taxes you’re paying all the taxes for the drug dealers, the prostitutes, the pimps, the gamblers, the illegals.

Wouldn’t it be nice if they had to pay all the same taxes that you have to pay?”

The Republican candidate added that under his plan the middle class would keep all of their income - but people who buy yachts, private jets and other luxury goods would pay more.

For NHPR News, I’m Dianne Finch.
