Both my parents lost their...
Personal/Household
note from
Raymond, NH
Both my parents lost their jobs in this economy. I'm a full time college student with no incoming funds and I depend on them completely. My mother had to file for bankruptcy and now has terrible credit, but fortunately she has been employed again. The company my father worked for fired him and he is now on bad terms with them because of it. He worked for them for decades.

Warmth from Millyard finds huge needs and great response
Helping Hand
note from
manchester, NH
I am one of the students working on the Warmth from the Millyard project, a warm clothing drive to provide warm clothes to a wide-variety of organizations in Manchester and Nashua. Each year we've done the drive we have seen increasing demand. This year, though, we're hearing about greater and more pressing needs--and a real sense of urgency from the organizations requesting clothes. I have found myself moved to tears after some of the phone calls.

Credit card debt
Personal/Household
note from
derry, NH
I've had credit cards for many years and have never had a problem paying them off or making payments, but recently I've had a harder time each month making the minimum payments. They are stacking up higher and higher each month. I assume it's from the recession and interest rates but I dont know what to do. When I used them years back I didnt expect to have such a problem with them, and I dont want to have bad credit but it seems that its happening. I think many people are going through the same thing right now with being in debt and not knowing what to do.

On behalf of the board and staff of NHPR, thank you for your participation in our Fall Membership Drive.
The business model of public radio leaves it to you, the listener, to decide whether and how much NHPR is worth to you. And your support translated into $380,000 raised for the station.
As ever, we are grateful for the trust you have shown for that is truly our most valuable asset. Thank you!

A Not-So-Random Act of Kindness
Helping Hand
note from
Mont Vernon, NH
A friend of mine has been unemployed for a year now. He is working hard to find a job, and I know he will. His laptop crashed a couple of months ago, and he has been timesharing the home pc with his family. Not the ideal situation, but he hasn't complained. His focus has been largely on helping others find work, and then on his own job search.

Lucky for the moment
Personal/Household
note from
manchester, NH
As I am still in school, I actually feel lucky compared to some of my friends who have already graduated. I am living at home for free until I graduate, so my living expenses are minimal. I have friends who have graduated with advanced degrees who are working minimum wage jobs to support themselves, and are still living at home because they can't afford not to. Hopefully by the time I graduate in the Summer of 2010 things will be looking up at least minimally.

Attended a job fair for...
Business
note from
derry, NH
Attended a job fair for seasonal employment. It began at 10:00am, about 50 people in line outside at 8:00am in the pouring rain. The job fair was from 8 - 6. I heard by 11:00am all jobs were filled. Many skilled and educated outplaced workers filled positions that have traditionally been filled by those who hold hourly paid jobs. Overheard some people leaving, remarking that they were offered a position but they did not accept it because they would not work for $9.00 an hour.

Helping Hand
note from
derry, NH
At a recent halloween festival at a local school, a teacher donated many costumes to a clothing swap being held the same night as the festival so all children would be able to participate in the festivities. One 8 year old, who was outfitted in a wonderful costume was over heard telling her teacher "I feel so special, this is the best night of my life".

Seen around town, an elderly...
Seen Around Town
note from
derry, NH
Seen around town, an elderly gentleman seen sitting on the side of the road near Market Basket in Londonderry, NH, with a sign that read "broke and hungry". He was sitting on the cold damp ground, several grocery bags had been left with him. His eyes were sad. I went across the street to Wendys and got him a meal and a hot coffee. He smiled with his eyes at me when I approached him. It made me very sad to see this man, who could be someone's grand-dad with what seems to be no one to care for him.
