Mussels Evolve Rapidly to Thwart Crab Invaders

One of the most dominant crab species on the New England coast is actually an invader.

The Asian shore crab has been spreading swiftly along the Atlantic since it arrived in the 1980s.

And it has found a smorgasbord of goodies to munch on—including the native blue mussel.

But researchers at the University of New Hampshire have found the mussel is not accepting the crab invasion without a fight—with remarkable speed, it’s evolved to hold its ground.

LibraryLook up in 4 Easy Steps

Library Look-up is a nifty way to see if your local library has a book that you have found on the Amazon or Barnes and Noble or some other book vendor web sites. First Very Important Point: You must be on the specific web page at Amazon or Barnes and Noble, that deals with the book that you're interested in. If you aren't, the button won't do a thing.

Second Very Important Point: If you're not sure what a web browser is, this tool probably isn't for you. This isn't meant to discourage you. If you like to learn by jumping into the deep end, then by all means, count to three and leap. It isn't that hard in the end. But if technical things tend to frustrate you – as they often do me – then consider yourself forewarned.
