Budget Problems Slow Manchester Schools' Progress

By Debra Daigle on Wednesday, July 12, 2006.

The state's largest school district - Manchester - is still among districts-in-need-of improvement in New Hampshire, according to the federal No Child Left Behind Law.

Although school officials have made progress over the last year to lift the district out of that status, current budget constraints are hampering efforts to move forward as fast as many would like.

New Hampshire Public Radio's Debra Daigle has more.

Artificial Intelligence

By Shay Zeller on Wednesday, July 12, 2006.

Dartmouth College is celebrating 50 years of Artificial Intelligence this week with a special conference that takes a look forward and a look back at the field. We'll find out how AI has evolved since its inception and how far scientists have come to creating the technological brain that's been depicted in science fiction for decades. We'll also look at the philosophical and ethical questions that go along with creating machines that emulate the human mind.

Our guest are:

Eugene Charniak, professor of Computer Science at Brown University. Charniak's expertise is in language development, and he's presenting a speech at the conference entitled "Why Natural Language Processing is Now Statistical Natural Language Processing."

James H. Moor, professor of Philosophy at Dartmouth. He's the conference's main organizer.

On Golden Pond at 25

By John Clayton on Wednesday, July 12, 2006.

It's the story of an aging couple, their summer lake home and a daughter who tries to close the gap between herself and her father. The movie "On Golden Pond", adapted from an Ernest Thompson screenplay, turns 25 this year and has become an indelible hit. Its popularity is due in part because of an all-star cast including Katherine Hepburn and the real life father-daughter team of Henry and Jane Fonda, in part because of a touching and relatable story-line and in part because of its idyllic setting of Squam Lake, New Hampshire. Twenty-five years later we look back at "On Golden Pond", the film, the stories of the people who were there during filming and why it has stood the test of time. John Clayton hosts. His guests are Garen Daly, a New Hampshire based movie reviewer, critic and Artistic Director for the Peterborough Community Theatre in Peterborough, New Hampshire and Ernest Thompson, Playwright and Screenwriter of On Golden Pond. We'll also be joined by Marty Leighton, Executive Director of the New Hampshire Film and Television Bureau from 1980-1983, who helped secure Squam Lake for the producers of On Golden Pond, Peter Francesco, a life long resident of Squam Lake and the town of Holderness, and Matthew Newton, Film Specialist and Manager of the New Hampshire Film and Television office.
