Poet Cleopatra Mathis

By Shay Zeller on Tuesday, February 28, 2006.

Tonight on The Front Porch, we meet Poet Cleopatra Mathis. Her new book, “White Sea” uses our New England landscape of ocean and snow to ask questions about the nature of our lives as humans. She says the book is her meditation on death and the loss of the soul. But her poems are not completely monochromatic. She uses the landscape of her childhood in Louisiana to bring color into her work.

Regional Relationships

By Laura Knoy on Tuesday, February 28, 2006.

Many New Hampshire high schools and some middle schools educate students from more than one town. Most of the time, these arrangements work fine, but there are moments when it's not one big happy family, as voters now in the Kearsarge area are finding out. We'll look at regional schools- when they work – when they don't – and why. Laura's guests are Mark Joyce, Executive Director of the New Hampshire School Administrator's Association and Ted Comstock, Executive Director and Legal Counsel for the New Hampshire School Boards Association. We'll also hear from Margot Sanger-Katz, Reporter for the Concord Monitor and Carl Nelson, Superintendent for SAU #9 in the North Country and President of the New Hampshire School Administrator's Association.

British Firm to Buy NH Gas Supplier, Key Span

By Jon Greenberg on Monday, February 27, 2006.

New Hampshire customers who buy their natural gas from Key Span may soon be writing checks to a London-based firm. National Grid, an energy company that provides electricity in England and Wales, has agreed to buy Key Span for more than seven billion dollars. The acquisition deal must be approved by stockholders and regulators, but if it goes through, it will create the third largest energy delivery company in the United States.

Many Drug Assistance Programs Ending

By Kerry Grens on Monday, February 27, 2006.

A few months ago several pharmaceutical companies that offer free drugs to low income seniors announced they would end that service.

The companies said those patients could find coverage through the new Medicare prescription drug benefit.

But some people don’t want to sign up for Medicare, claiming it’s too expensive.

And senior health officials—even those who are championing the Medicare benefit—are pleading with drug companies to continue to provide free drugs.

Bob McCarthy

By Shay Zeller on Monday, February 27, 2006.

Guitarist Bob McCarthy cut his teeth on the New York and Boston folk scenes in the late 1960's and early 70's, and he's kept the beat going since then. He's got a new album called "Star of the Sea", and he says it was inspired by the little music buttons he hears on public radio. He'll play in our studio and we'll talk with him about some of the legends he got to know on the folk circuit.

The Keene Sentinel's Donna Moxley reports.

Seeing Signs

By Laura Knoy on Monday, February 27, 2006.

The state senate wants “Live Free or Die” on all signs at New Hampshire’s borders and the Governor’s all for it. Still, anything involving our state motto always stirs great discussion in the legislature. But does anyone else care what our welcome sign says? We’ll debate that point and find out what catchy slogans greet motorists entering other states. Laura's guest is Rick Broussard, Executive Editor for New Hampshire Magazine. Other guests TBA.

New Hampshire Welcome Signs

What should New Hampshire's highway signs look like? Should they include the "Live Free or Die" motto, or should another slogan be used? The Exchange looked at these and many other issues regarding New Hampshire's highway welcome signs. You can hear The Exchange here.
